The largest frog in North America

Bullfrogs are green to brown with a large round eardrum behind the eye. They spend most of their lives in or near still water.

A chorus on summer evenings

Male bullfrogs call with a deep, droning “jug-o-rum” that carries across ponds at night. The sound helps females find mates and keeps males spaced out. Vocal sacs act as resonators that amplify the call.

An invasive species

Outside their native range the bullfrog is a problem. They eat native amphibians and can carry a fungus that harms other frog species, so they should never be released into the wild.
